Jim Bottomley earned Frankie Frisch’s praise as “the best clutch hitter I ever saw.”
The graceful first baseman with the sunny disposition drove in 100 or more runs six years in a row, leading the National League twice. He set a major league record with 12 RBI in a single game, when he went 6-for-6 on September 16, 1924, with two homers and a double against Brooklyn. He was the National League MVP in 1928.
Did you know … that in 1936, Jim Bottomley set the single-season record for most unassisted double plays by a first baseman with eight?
